Thrush

Have you noticed white patches inside your baby's mouth? It could be thrush. Thrush is a harmless fungal infection characterized by white patches usually found on the gums and tongue. These white patches are often described as looking like cottage cheese or milk curds. Thrush is not dangerous, but it can be painful and may interrupt your baby's feeding. Also, your baby can pass thrush on to you if you're breastfeeding, resulting in a painful yeast infection on your nipples that will need a doctor's treatment.

In many cases, no treatment for thrush is necessary. It typically clears up on its own in a couple of weeks. However, if your baby appears uncomfortable by it or if your breastfeeding while your baby has thrush, call your pediatrician. He or she can prescribe a medication to treat the infection.
