The role and safety of our preservatives
When it comes to selecting products for your baby, it's essential to choose those that are designed for your baby’s unique skin and hair care needs — products that are evaluated for safety and formulated to be gentle and mild. And when you’re buying natural baby products, a careful decision is even more important. JOHNSON'S® NATURAL® makes that choice easier by setting a new standard in natural baby care products.
Why preservatives are necessary
Preservatives are commonly used in personal care products to prevent the growth of yeast, bacteria or mold. Without being properly preserved, product quality and even safety can be compromised. Products having microbial growth can cause skin irritation and possibly infection. Because preservatives play an important role in many products, it’s important to know what you’re choosing for your baby.
But are they natural?
All JOHNSON'S® NATURAL® products contain at least 98% naturally derived ingredients. The remaining 2% of our ingredients are dedicated to ensuring the stability and preservation of our natural formulas.
Why don’t we use natural preservatives exclusively? Preservatives are not interchangeable, and natural preservatives are often only weakly effective against the necessary broad range of microorganisms. Also, natural preservatives usually require very high concentrations (sometimes as much as 100 times higher) to work effectively, and they’re often not stable over the shelf life of the product. So, just because a preservative is found in nature doesn’t mean that it’s safer or better.
At the JOHNSON’S® Brand, we take a very careful approach to selecting preservatives that have been evaluated for safety and are appropriate for babies. We rigorously and comprehensively evaluate our final products for safety and mildness, including assessing for potential irritation and allergies.
How preservatives are chosen
Quality baby-care products should use the preservative ingredients that are appropriate for each specific formulation — and for your baby. Preservative selection depends on several key factors, including:
- the type of product
- who's expected to use it;
- how it's intended to be used.
We are very selective about choosing preservatives for our JOHNSON'S® NATURAL® products. We know they will be used on children 0-3 years of age and that they might be included in products that will be used near the eyes, mouth, nose or diaper area. We consider other factors, too, such as whether:
- the product will be used frequently, or stored over a long period of time and only used now and again
- the product will be stored in a wet environment (like the edge of your bathtub) or in a humid area (like the bathroom)
Government regulations and oversight
The JOHNSON'S® Brand complies with all regulations in the markets in which we operate, and often exceeds them with our own high standards.
In the United States, regulatory oversight of cosmetic products, including preservative ingredients, is the responsibility of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Among its responsibilities, the FDA has the authority to ban or restrict ingredients due to safety concerns. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), an independent scientific body that works in tandem with the FDA, thoroughly reviews and assesses the safety of ingredients and publishes results in scientific journals.
In the European Union, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) is responsible for the safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients.
Selecting safe and appropriate preservatives
The JOHNSON'S® NATURAL® Brand takes great care in determining the best way to preserve our products to ensure the highest quality standards for the entire life of the product.
We are very selective about the preservatives we will use in our baby products—using only a small number of those that are available.
Every preservative ingredient must meet the JOHNSON'S® BEST FOR BABY NATURALS™ Standard and our commitment to safety, quality and comfort is continuous, including:
- Ongoing review of the most up-to-date research and available data on preservative ingredients.
- Identifying potential factors that may have an impact on the effectiveness and safety of the product's use, including how it will be used and where it will be stored.
- Evaluating the suppliers of all our ingredients to ensure that each ingredient conforms to our high standards for quality and safety.
Our highest priority is you and your baby. That's why we take the greatest care in developing baby-safe products that are mild and gentle — products that are best for your baby, naturally.
